About the Program

The Sports Medicine Program will provide students with a strong foundation in human anatomy, physiology, and introduction to clinical rehabilitation skills.

Upon completion of the 3 year program, students will be competent in assisting patients with completing their therapeutic exercise program, monitoring vitals, and demonstrating proper body mechanics for weight-lifting and supervising patient mobility.

Students will learn the principles of designing exercise programs for healthy individuals and athletes. Students will learn how to develop proper diets through the basic principles of nutrition. They will also learn the impact of nutrition on athletic performance and disease processes.

Offering a program of this nature provides opportunities in various career pathways within the healthcare industry. The program will have a solid educational base on which to build a post-secondary degree or advanced certification. The Sports Medicine Program will provide students the opportunity to understand the available careers in health care, along with what prerequisites are necessary for admission into a post-secondary program or for further fitness certifications.

Careers available directly out of the program could include Personal Training, Coach, and Rehabilitative Aide. Careers available with additional post-secondary training include Massage Therapist, Personal Trainer, Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapist Assistant, Strength & Conditioning Coach, P.E. Teacher, Exercise Physiologist, Dietician, and Sports Psychologist.

Task List

The task list below displays how the students will be assessed for each standard. These standards are color coded by year. The curriculum is developed so that students may finish their program in 2 years if they so choose. Students will have the opportunity to continue to work on these standards/competencies throughout their time in the Sports Medicine Program.

Students will be prepared and able to sit for the following certifications

American Medical Certification Association (AMCA): Physical Therapy Aide Certification
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM): Personal Trainer

(Upon passing their specific exam, they will receive their certificate after receiving their high-school diploma and turning 18 years of age)

Preparation to pursue post-secondary degrees and certifications

Researching various health professions and post-secondary programs to find the best fit for each student
Staff will assist 2^nd and 3^rd year students with finding opportunities to fulfill pre-requisites for admission into post-secondary program.
Helping students network with health care facilities and providers for shadowing and observation hours. (Most health related programs require 10-20 observation hours in multiple settings prior to admission)

Instructor's Resources

Canvas is the online learning platform that BCAVTS will be using this school year. All Sports Medicine students will be using Canvas to take exams and to use as a resource. Classroom resources will be posted for each unit along with projects, videos of our lectures & lab demonstrations, copies, handouts, notes, and exams.
